BECE 2021: Headteacher and 11 other teachers arrested

Security personnel of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) together with the National Security have arrested a headmaster and 11 teachers for allegedly engaging in malpractice in the ongoing Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

The 12 teachers were arrested at two centres in the Offinso Municipality in the Ashanti Region and the Senase R/C Basic School in Brekum, Bono Region.

In the first case of malpractice in the Offinso Municipality, an invigilator who is a teacher at the Offinso State ‘A’ JHS, was arrested for taking money from the candidates while giving out answer booklets to them.

When interrogated, she said the students were contributing to her voluntarily. She was being picked up for further investigations.

Also in the Dwamena Akenten M/A JHS examination centre in Offinso, a headteacher and nine teachers were picked up after they were seen solving the section A of the Social Studies paper.

Also at the Senase R/C Basic School examination centre, an invigilator by name Ransford Osei, was arrested for sending snapshots of the social studies questions to a friend to be solved for him.

Osei absconded when the police was escorting him.

The Head of the National Office of WAEC, Mrs. Wendy Addy-Lamptey, told the students that they could perform very well even without cheating.

She wished the candidates well and asked them to have ample rest “and not be anxious but focused and write what you know.’
