But for the latest developments, all Ghanaians would have been made to believe the Saglemi Housing Project was a brainchild of John Mahama when it is not, as former Minister of State in charge of Works and Housing, Enoch Teye Mensah has exposed the John Mahama camp.
The NDC has been frequently accused of appropriating Atta Mill’s projects for John Mahama creating the impression that the late Mills had nothing to his name apart from his “Asomdwoehene” title.
According to E.T. Mensah, it is John Evans Atta Mills who granted Executive approval and sought funding for the project to commence and included sewage, road, service plot among others for which Ghana Home Loans had been contracted as an offtaker.
Mr. E.T Mensah revealed that the late Mills was passionate about workers Housing issues and set forth to do something about it.
“We were lucky that over the years, the government had acquired some land to build houses for the people; the housing committee [I formed] selected Saglemi…We had to prepare to go to Parliament [to lay the offer before the house]…it was close to elections at the time and so, the President decided that he will approve it, thus, give executive approval to the proposal so that we take it to Parliament, that was how come President Mills gave executive approval; that was his project,” he indicated.
“Again, we brought in the offtaker thus Ghana Home Loans to offtake all 5,000 housing units and to hand them to the workers. We have then even registered workers who were going to occupy it,”
He stated further anybody who would say the cost of the housing project excluded sewage, road and the service plot then he “doesn’t know what he is talking about”.
“I’m surprised at what is happening because when Prof Mills died and some of us were removed [from the ministry] and new persons were appointed, I prepared a detailed handing over notes and I gave Alhaji Collins Dauda my copy. He knows it and he should have a copy as well,” E. T. Mensah noted.
Sammy Gyamfi has however responded to E.T Mensah.
“The issues about the “Saglemi” Housing Project which are being disputed by Hon. E.T Mensah is a well-documented matter of public record.
Facts are sacrosanct, and same shall be laid bare to settle all the issues in contention.” He wrote.
