A former Deputy Finance Minister under the Presidency of John Mahama, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has denied claims by activists of the governing New Patriotic Party(NPP) that the National Democratic Congress(NDC) government paid salaries to the then First and Second Ladies, asserting that he( A to Forson) was in charge of Government Budget at the Finance Ministry and the purported salaries were never paid as being alleged by the activists on social media.
Dr Ato Forson, who is the Member of Parliament(MP) for the Ajumako Enyan Esiam, Constituency, described a document attributed to the Finance Ministry showing the amounts the 1st and 2nd Ladies were paid from 2012 to 2016 as fake news, calling on the Ministry of Finance to clear the air on the payments by issuing a statement.
“As deputy minister of finance responsible for budget from April 2016 to Jan 2017, I can state categorically that the Ministry NEVER PAID these purported salaries to both the First and Second ladies. I urge the Ministry of Finance to issue a statement to clear the air! #FakeNews,” he tweeted.
Many notable activists of the governing NPP have been sharing an extract of a document allegedly sourced from the Ministry of Finance that shows the salaries that had been purported paid to the First and Second Ladies by the erstwhile NDC government.
The move is seen as an attempt by the ruling NPP to counter the NDC’s criticism of the present government’s payment of salaries to the current First and Second Ladies.
