Shocking! Axim residents already preparing washed-ashore dolphins for the market

Despite claims by the Fisheries Commission and the Food and Drugs Authority that they have retrieved most of the dolphins washed ashore at the Axim-Bewire beach for burial, Citi News has gathered that some of these mammals are still in the hands of fishmongers.

Fishmongers found preparing some of the dead mammals for the market told Citi News they are ready to release them to the regulators but would need a refund of over GH5,000 spent in purchasing the dead dolphins.

Around 1:00 pm on Sunday, April 4, 2021, the Axim Bewire Beach was flooded with large sea mammals believed to be melon-headed whales.

The Fisheries Commission had told Citi News that it had been able to retrieve about 30 of the 80 mammals for burial.

Though the fisheries sector regulators may not have found all the dead sea mammals for burial, it is the expectation that residents will also not endanger themselves by consuming some of these animals as investigations are currently ongoing to ascertain why they were brought ashore.
