Pregnant women in labor and sick individuals in Oseikrom, Kakatre, Bentilkrom, Bayerebon number 2,3,4, Abesua and it’s surroundings in the Atwima Mponuah District of the Ashanti Region are transported on motor bikes to the only health center at Bayerebon number 5 due to the deplorable state of the road.
Though the motorcycles are not the safest form of transportation for people in such situations,in the area they are very popular for efficiency and availability as vehicles are unavailable to ply the poor road network especially in the raining season and have become intrinsic part of the areas health system.
The state owned facility established more than a decade ago has not seen any renovation and expansion works over the years. It employs not more than ten (10) health workers and services the entire population of about fourteen thousand (14,000) from about forty(40) communities in the Atwima Mponuah District and villages such as Nipankyehia, Domeabra, Mfantekrom,Pakyi, Nyameyehene etc in the Amansie West District of the Ashanti Region.
The health facility is confronted with quite a number of problems ranging from lack of medical assistant, inadequate beds(only 4 beds) and chairs, no source of water supply and lack of toilet facility for patients. A mother of a pregnant woman from Bentilkrom said they had to walk several miles to Bayerebon number 2 to bore a motorcycle as motor bikes can’t ply the road because the wooden bridges are damaged.she added that in cases where sick and pregnant women are unavailable to sit on the motorcycle they are carried on doors to the health center.
According to Madam Augustina Duruwaah, medical officer in charge of the center despite the numerous problems facing health delivery in the area every month they record seven hundred (700) to eight hundred (800) clinical cases. She further said transportation of Patients to the district capital in emergency cases becomes a problem due to the poor nature of the road.
Madam Augustina Duruwaah, appealed to corporate bodies, philantropist, individuals, NGO’s and the government to come to the aide of the health center and assist them with beds, generator and also grade the poor road network for them to enhance good service
