Presidential Candidate for the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has missed his 3 million votes target in the Ashanti Region.
He is reported to have won more than one million seven hundred thousand votes(1,700,000) in the Ashanti Region, MyNewsGH.com can report.
The President last week challenged the people of the Ashanti Region to vote massively for the party to have at least 3 million votes.
According to him, attaining 3 million votes from the party’s stronghold is very important for the party to win come December 7 convincingly.
“The Ashanti Region is the heart of the New Patriotic Party. As a political party, if you don’t focus more on your base you would always be found wanting. Our party from time immemorial; the Ashanti region has remained our cornerstone so there is the need for the people of Asante to support and encourage the party in everything”. President Akufo-Addo said this in an interview with Kumasi-based Angel FM monitored by MyNewsGH.com.
When asked why he has frequently visited the Ashanti Region in the few days to the elections Nana Akufo-Addo responded by saying, “That is tactical and arithmetic. At all cost we have to get 3 million votes at home”.
“Frankly speaking the Ashanti Region is the base of the New Patriotic Party”, he affirmed.
But at the close of polls on Monday, the certified results announced by the Electoral Commission Officer in the region revealed a missed target though a massive win for the party.
According to the Electoral Commission, President Nana Akufo – Addo won 1,795,824 representing 71.64% of the total votes cast whiles John Dramani Mahama won 653,149 votes representing 26.1% of the total votes cast.
Meanwhile, both the NPP and the NDC are claiming they have won the elections. The NDC has categorically stated that, they have indeed won majority in Parliament hence.
Mr. John Dramani Mahama, the flag bearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has said per figures and evidence available to his party indicates that, they are winning the Presidential election which is yet to be announced by the Electoral Commission.
“We thank the Ghanaian people for the confidence they’ve expressed in us. It’s clear the Ghanaian people want a change in this country. Ghanaians are tired of this Akufo Addo’s government. You thank you for giving us the majority in parliament 140 seats in Parliament and no attempt should be made to subvert the ……”, Mr. Mahama said categorically.
According to him, after looking at the result the party has collated so far, he is convinced and happy with the result.
“We have won ten regions out of 16”, he said, “we will resist any attempt to subvert any the will of the people”, he adds.
But government in a response to the NDC by the Information Minister Mr. Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has resisted the claim by the NDC saying it is untrue and a falsehood for them (NDC) to claim majority win in parliament.
