Veteran political activist and journalist Kwesi Pratt Junior has argued that the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) has given no tangible or convincing reason on why it is hell-bent on compiling a new voters’ register, insisting that every supposed reason so far given is a “horrible” reason.

The EC has consistently explained that the country needs a new voters’ register so that much more credible elections can be held as the country prepares for the 2020 general elections in December.

But Mr Pratt, known for his forthrightness and bluntness in speech, has called the reasons provided as unconvincing, thereby “horrible”.

In his view, reasons such as missing voter ID cards and others are horrible reasons to give for compiling a new voters’ register that will cost the country billions of Cedis.

“We are going to spend billions of cedis’s to compile a voters’ register. And one of the justifications for it is that some beautiful lady somewhere wants to make sure that her card is changed so that her new hairdo will show on the card… And then we are told that: look, someone has lost his voter ID card…In fact, it’s a horrible reason for compiling a new voter register. And many other horrible reasons have been given,” he stated on Pan African TV monitored by MyNewsGh.com

Many have condemned the move by the EC to compile a new voters’ register, citing the cost and the risk it poses in the midst of the novel coronavirus.

But the governing New Patriotic Party ( NPP) has been untiring supporter of the EC’s decision, regularly explaining the reasons for the need of a new voters’ register as if it were speaking on the EC’s behalf.
