Longstanding fearless member of the governing New Patriotic Party(NPP) Hajia Fati, who was due for imprisonment for assaulting an Adom FM reporter, managed to avoid custodial sentence, thanks to the clemency of the judge.
Judge Isaac Addo converted her 20 months imprisonment term to GH¢10,400 fine, saying that Hajia was too elderly to serve the custodial sentence.
He however warned that if she failed to pay the fine, she will be imprisoned for the twenty-month period.
Hajia Fati in 2018 viciously assaulted the Adom FM reporter having mistaken her for an onion seller who had strayed into the NPP headquarters.
In court however, the tough-talking politician pleaded for leniency which ultimately led to her being fined instead of being imprisoned.
But Professor and legal luminary has wondered the what sort of legal reasoning went into the decision. He wrote: “Judge Isaac Addo found Hajia Fati guilty of assault and fined her GH¢10,400 rather than sending her to jail.
The Judge said he decided not to send her to jail because of her age. However, if she fails to pay the fine, she will spend the next 20 months in jail.
This sounds like Hajia is too old to go to jail unless she can’t pay GH¢10,400 then she becomes young enough to go to jail. Ghana anaa!
