NDC, NPP tussle over new voter register is ‘eight wonders’ of the world – Journalist

Award-winning broadcast journalist Umaru Sanda Amadu has expressed amazement at the ongoing disagreement between Ghana’s leading political parties over the planned compilation of a new voters’ register by the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC), describing the development as the eighth Wonder of the World.

For him, it is utterly surprising that the governing New Patriotic Party(NPP) which won the 2016 presidential elections with a margin of over a million votes with the current register is so fervently in support of the compilation of a new voters’ register while the National Democratic Congress( NDC), which lost power, is opposed to the its compilation.

“This situation where the NPP is vehemently OPPOSED to a Voters’ Register which served as basis for its ‘1 million vote’ victory margin and the NDC SUPPORTING the register which formed the basis for its ouster by ‘1 million votes’ should surely be the 8th Wonder of the World!” He declared on social media.

The EC’s decision to compile a new voters’ register has been met with opposition and outrage by the NDC and some other opposition parties as well as some civil society organisations (CSOs).

However the governing NPP has been unwaveringly supportive of the EC’s decision, insisting that the move will ensure that a much more credible register is compiled.

Meanwhile some NGOs such as Imani Africa, have argued that the EC’s decision amounts to a waste of scarce resources given that the current register is credible enough for the 2020 general elections which is just some seven  months away.
