There is a build up of great tension in the Northern Region National Democratic Congress over a perceived turf war between Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu and a private contractor aligned to the NDC one Fuzak Yushaw over “who is in charge” in the region.
Mr. Haruna Iddrisu has for years been the face of Northern Region NDC and is widely regarded as the most Influential politician of Northern extraction in modern times.
Although he has had clashes in the last with the likes of Inusah Fuseini, Haruna Iddrisu has largely remained unsullied and is widely respected across the country.
However, the emergence of Alhaji Fuzak who is also commanding a wide following among the Northern NDC Youth front has provided a new competition leading to argument among Northern youth bases especially in Tamale and its environs on who among the two is “better”.
The cold war has reportedly led to tensions and show of power between the two factions as the private contractor Alhaji Fuzak continues to show force while the Minority Leader’s supporters say his authority and inflence in unimpeacheable and unchallengeable.
In the light of the above, a youth group aligned with the Fuzak faction calling itself Coalition of Youth Groups in the Northern Region held a press conference on 6th August, 2021 where they laid out a litany of allegations against the Minority leader Haruna Iddrisu while whitewashing their sponsor Fuzak.
While they pledged support to the flagbearership of John Mahama in 2024, they laid out their grievances against developments in the region that could cost the NDC its 2024 victory.
“This (the Fuzak Haruna impasse) undoubtedly makes the party unpopular in the region and by extension, having the potency to dwindle the fortunes of the next flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama and the NDC as it was the case in previous elections. It is for this reason that we embark on this rescue mission to set the records bluntly, without fear or favor”, they wrote.
After the event, they matched to the residence of Nyab Kasuli lana – chairman of the council of elders in the region to submit a petition to him on the issues they raised.
