NPP MPs Lost Because They Were Broke- Kennedy Agyapong

The Assin Central Legislator, Kennedy Agyapong has expressed his disappointment with the manner with which party leadership handled the financing of the campaign of their parliamentary candidates in the just ended elections. According to him, the loss the New Patriotic Party (NPP) suffered in the election is largely as a result of the delayed release of finances for the campaigns of the candidates.

He feared that the situation could have been worse if not for the good policies and the freebies President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo introduced. Kennedy Agyapong stated unequivocally that the incumbent Members of Parliament within the party were broke and could hardly finance their campaigns by themselves.

Speaking on NET 2 Television’s ‘The National Agenda’ Show, Mr. Agyapong stressed that his party his warnings in 2018 had never been heeded hence the huge losses they suffered in this year’s elections. He suggested that the party could have awarded some contracts to MPs so they could earn something more to sponsor their campaigns anytime the need arises.

“Don’t be surprised the MPs lost. They were not resourced until the last minute. I have said this since 2018, that it will be best you enrich the MPs with some contracts…at least GHC 2 million for the conduct of his campaign in the constituency. They could have made at least GHC300,000 from it to sponsor the demands of the people…but the MPs were so broke. How much is their salary?

“Had it not been for Free SHS we would have lost more,” he emphasized.

He continued that until the party learns to enrich its core supporters to be great financiers of the party, they would suffer the shocks in elections when their opponent is positioned to do much better.
