Parliament begins Anti LGBTQI+ Bill public hearing today

Parliament’s legal and Constitutional Committee will today begin public hearing on the Private Members Bill to protect Ghanaian Family Values.

It could be remembered that eight Members of Parliament (MP) led by the MP for Ningo Prampram Sam George have sponsored a Private Members Bill to criminalize LGBTQI+ and its related activities in Ghana.

The other members of parliament that joined in presenting the bill include, Emmanuel Bedzrah (MP, Ho West) Della Adjoa Sowah (MP, Kpando), John Ntim Fordjour (MP, Assin South), Alhassan Sayibu Suhuyini (MP, Tamale North), Helen Adjoa Ntoso (MP, Krachi West), Rita Naa Odoley Sowah (MP, La Dadekotopon) and Rockson Nelson Dafeamekpor (MP, South Dayi).

The bill, which they term as a ‘Bill on the Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values’, was presented to Speaker, Alban Bagbin on Tuesday, June 29, 2021.

However, it has since been met with mixed reactions as Human Rights advocates have sent memos to the Constitution and Legal Committee of Parliament to quash it as its passing will infringe on the rights of persons involved in LGBTQI+.

Some have also argued that the content of the bill needs to be looked at and some portions struck out.

Some 15 prominent Ghanaians, including academics and accomplished entrepreneurs, have penned their opposition to the bill that seeks to hand harsh sentences on the homosexual community and their allies. The bill, ‘Bill on the Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values’, criminalizes all LGBTQI+ activities for up to a ten-year jail term.

But the bill has received the full backing of the Christian, Muslim and Traditional communities in Ghana. Signatures have since been sent to back the bill from the Christian community and calls have been made to ensure that the hearing of the bill and voting is done publicly.
