Pharmacist and public Health Expert Dr Kwame Sarpong Asiedu has described comments by Nana Boakye, National Youth Organizer of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) on the spread of COVID-19 in senior high schools as extremely unhelpful, calling for him to be stopped from making comments on the pandemic.
Lawyer Henry Nana Boakye has said that students in Senior High Schools who have tested positive for COVID-19 brought the virus from home and didn’t get infected in schools.
But Dr Sarpong Asiedu has described his assertions as lacking an understanding of public health, noting that any views on the pandemic that is not based on science is completely dangerous to fighting the pandemic.
“Can someone stop Nana B from talking on COVID-19? To say “SHS students with COVID-19 brought the virus from home” is ignorant and displays a lack of understanding of public health assortative and disassortative pathogen spread. We are in a phase of this pandemic where talk that ignores the science is extremely unhelpful,” he noted.
Dr Sarpong Asiedu has been a leading light on discussions about Ghana’s COVID-19 fight, regularly providing insightful analyses and suggestions on the way forward.
Meanwhile COVID-19 cases have continued to rise in the country with several senior high schools reporting cases.
The Accra Girls SHS has recorded some 55 cases out of several hundreds of samples taken. There has been calls by some Ghanaians for the schools to be closed given the spread.
But the Health Minister, Kwaku Agyemang Manu, who recently recovered from the virus has argued that Ghanaians must learn to live with the virus while observing the preventive or safety protocols.
