Two people are feared dead following a heavy downpour that hits parts of Accra on Tuesday, June 9, 2020, resulting in some flooding.
One of the dead persons has been identified as c Kojo Antwi, an errand boy who resides at Adabraka-Odawna a flood-prone area within the nation’s capital
According to an eyewitness, Kojo is believed to have been electrocuted by one of the electricity poles when he woke up around midnight to notify some neighbours about the heavy downpour , and therefore they should move their vehicles and other items from the area.
“Kojo is a good guy, he notifies us anytime the rain is about to fall heavily, so we re-park our vehicles and relocate other moveable items so they’re not taken away by the rain. Between 12 and 12:30am, he knocked most of the doors in the house we live in. All the ladies woke up and subsequently alerted us including a policeman who resides in the house.
“He later entered his room. All that we heard after he entered the room was a scream, shouting for people’s attention, but lo and behold he had already been electrocuted when we entered the room. It appears an extension cable in his room which houses three people ignited and possibly killed him.”
The other person is however yet to be identified.
Several parts of Accra including parts of Achimota, around the old market, Avenor, Alajo and some parts of Kaneshie got flooded.
Flooding in Accra has become a perennial situation and all attempts by the authorities to get citizens to avoid building on waterways and clogging the drains have proven futile.
