An economist and former Director-General of the National Development Planning Commission says the position of the Vice Presidential Candidate is not a preserve for only economists.
According to Dr. Nii Moi Thompson, any well knowledgeable expertise with sound mind can be chosen as a running mate to partner a presidential candidate.
In recent times, economists have become very key in the decision for choosing a running mate by the major political parties in the country because the running mate if the party wins the presidential elections becomes automatically the head of the economic management team.
The flagbearer of the opposition NDC, John Mahama, however swept this trend aside by choosing an educationist and for that matter an English Scholar to partner him in the December elections.
Speaking on Citi FM’s Point Blank show last night monitored by MyNewsGh.com, Dr. Thompson said “first of all the Vice President is not an economic position and that is why the President chose someone who was a non-economist.”
He however pointed out that he never expressed interest in becoming the running mate for the NDC flagbearer, and therefore was surprise to see his name pop up as one of the potential nominees.
“I believe I am qualified for the position, but at this point in time, I was not interested. I knew all those who were under consideration. They were all high calibre people. I have been working with some of them”, he emphasized.
Former President John Mahama chose former Education Minister and Vice Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast as his running mate on Monday 6th July, 2020.
Some have attributed her nominee to superstition instead of realism.
